Prep Boys Golf: Knights need 320 for state

Greenon’s coach Steve Norris thinks a score of 320 — same as sectionals — will secure state bid.

SPRINGFIELD — Steve Norris has a number in mind for his Greenon High School boys golf team today: 320.

That’s the score the coach thinks his team needs to shoot at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown to finish in the top two at the Division II district tournament and qualify for state.

The Knights shot 320 to win the sectional title at Reid North last week, and Norris said the course is comparable to Weatherwax.

“Kids don’t score well at Reid North. I don’t know if it’s the greens or the layout,” Norris said. “The kids who do well there normally do well at Weatherwax. Length is not really a problem for our team. We hit the ball pretty long.”

The Knights played tough courses all season in preparation for playing big tournaments late in the season.

“We’ve played a lot of tournaments the last two seasons, a lot more than we ever have,” Norris said. “We do it for a reason, not to win those tournaments, but to really prepare the kids for these big tournaments: the CBC, the Clark County, the sectional and now the district.

“Hopefully, the golf gods are looking out for you. You just never know. We have a legit chance. I can’t say how good of a chance, but I think it’s legit. I think we can be the first or second team. It’s the best team I’ve ever had.”

Dylan Anderson and Sam Klarer have been the team’s top scorers this season, averaging close to 39 strokes per nine holes. Ross Brandon, Brandon Mamer, Chad Gerlach and Clay Robinson all shoot around 40, giving the Knights a balanced group.

Klarer has been the team’s most improved golfer.

“Sam is playing a totally different level,” Norris said. “He got out of his comfort zone. Once you get out of your comfort zone, it gets easy. He has the game. He has the best swing. He’s been a difference-maker for us.”

Kenton Ridge also shot 320 at the sectional tournament, losing to Greenon on a fifth-man tiebreaker, and will compete at Weatherwax today, too.

West Liberty-Salem’s Ben Rutan and Northeastern’s Andrew Williams will compete as individuals.
