SPRINGFIELD — After her team’s 1-0 loss to Madeira in a district final, Northwestern High School girls soccer coach Vicki Packard-Cooper became the Mustangs’ biggest fan.
The Warriors wanted Madeira to win the Division II state title — and that’s exactly what happened. It was a tiny consolation for Northwestern, which felt it could have beaten the Mustangs, but lost on a last-second goal.
“I didn’t want it to end,” Packard-Cooper said. “It was the feeling overall from the parents. It’s a great comment about this season as a whole, when people make that.”
The Warriors’ success has led to several honors. Northwestern junior defender Lauren Bischoff was named the 2010 Springfield News-Sun All-Clark County Girls Soccer Player of the Year, while Packard-Cooper was named the All-Clark County Girls Soccer Coach of the Year.
The awards are based on regular season performance only.
Northwestern finished 16-2-2. It won the Central Buckeye Conference Mad River Division title for a second straight season, finishing with the best record in the league (10-0-1).
Packard-Cooper said she was very pleased with her team’s performance, especially in the CBC. The Warriors tied a 12-year-old record for wins in a season.
“There were numerous teams who could’ve taken the title,” Packard-Cooper said. “When we went into it, we knew each game would be tough.”
Bischoff, a sweeper, helped anchor a defense that allowed just 14 goals in 20 matches with 12 shutouts.
“It felt great (to repeat), and this year it was an even better feeling knowing we worked together as a team to win it,” Bischoff said. “It wasn’t just one person. It was all of us.”
