Nathan Reep closing out career at Geneva

Emmanuel Christian grad named college's athlete of the week last week.

SPRINGFIELD — Nathan Reep’s career is slowly coming to an end for Geneva College.

The Emmanuel Christian Academy graduate and Golden Tornadoes senior forward is making the most of his time on the court.

“It’s been a good year so far,” Reep said. “I’m really enjoying it and taking full advantage of my last opportunity as a collegiate player.”

The Golden Tornadoes are 11-10 this season. Reep was named the Geneva College Men’s Athlete of the Week last week after scoring 13 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting night, while dishing out five assists in a 75-67 loss to Bethany College.

“We have a good group of guys to play with,” Reep said. “It’s been a fun ride.”

Reep is one of the team’s top reserves, averaging 4.2 points per game in about 13 minutes of playing time each game. He made the sixth start of his career Feb. 3, scoring 12 points in a 92-89 loss to Thomas More.

“Coach really uses me as a spark plug,” Reep said. “I’ve fallen into that role where I’ll come off the bench and give a little bit of extra energy. When I get an opportunity I take advantage of it.”

Geneva is a provisional member of NCAA Division III, making the transition from NAIA during Reep’s freshman season. But the Golden Tornadoes are ineligible to play in the President’s Athletic Conference tournament.

“It kind of stinks, but while you’re playing you don’t really think about it,” Reep said. “It’s still basketball and you’re going out there to play and win.”

The only chance they have play in the postseason rests on the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association tournament — and they must be over .500 to qualify. They’ll need to win two of their final four games.

“Our goal is to win out and go in on a streak,” Reep said.

Reep will graduate in May with a degree in communications arts. He hopes to pursue athletic training in the future, but doesn’t want to stop playing at Geneva.

“It’s been fun while it’s lasted,” Reep said. “I really have enjoyed my time. I don’t want these last four games to end any time soon.”
