Mistakes in second half doom Knights

MONROE — The Greenon girls soccer team stuck with Indian Hill for a half. Mistakes doomed the Knights in the second.

Those mistakes, more than the result, a 2-0 loss in a Division II district final at Monroe High School, will haunt coach Ray Raines.

“The two goals we gave up were weak goals,” Raines said. “If we get those back, we’re probably going to overtime. That’s what happens. You learn from it. I wish we had them back, but we don’t. You can’t give up those type of goals.”

The game was scoreless at halftime. Indian Hill, the No. 2 team in the state in Division II, broke through three minutes into the second half on a goal by Alexa Damaska. Eight minutes after that, Kaeli Flaska made it 2-0.

The Knights had few solid chances in the final 28 minutes, but Indian Hill showed again why it hasn’t given up a goal in tournament play this season.

Indian Hill has outscored its last three opponents 14-0 and has 12 shutouts this season.

“Indian Hill is a very good team,” Raines said. “I love the way they play. They play good and smart. They were with the wind in the first half, and we hung in there.

“I don’t think they really threatened us too much,” Raines continued. “We were hoping to get into the second half with the wind behind our back, but we just couldn’t do it. ... They had more speed than us, especially in the middle of the field. They were a very disciplined team.”

Greenon finished the season 13-4-2.

“We just told them, we go on from this,” Raines said. “Keep your heads up. Stay positive. Look toward next year. Work hard in the offseason. Let’s go that way. But we don’t want to make excuses for our play. They just outplayed us. We could have won the game if we played a little bit better. I think we had a couple opportunities, but not many.”
