ENON — Allie Turner was stunned.
The Greenon High School senior girls basketball player knew she’d had a record-setting career, but never dreamed of having her number retired.
At the Knights’ winter sports awards banquet, the school handed Turner her black Greenon jersey and her old Indian Valley middle school jersey in framed cases — retiring her No. 13 at both schools.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Turner said.
For her record-setting performance this season, Turner was named the 2010 News-Sun All-Area Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
She also won the award last season, which is based on regular-season performance only.
Turner, who will play at Division I Morehead State, averaged 28.8 points and 4.6 assists per game this season. She also shot 92.3 percent from the free-throw line and 40.2 percent from the 3-point line.
She also became the first player in school history to surpass 2,000 points and the seventh player in Dayton-area history to accomplish the feat. She finished her career with 2,076 points, good enough for 30th all-time on the Ohio High School Athletic Association record book.
The Knights finished the season 12-10, winning their first tournament game since 2003. Turner, who’ll play in the Ohio North-South and Ohio-Kentucky all-star games in April, said she couldn’t have accomplished anything without her teammates.
“Our team really bonded and we really were a family,” Turner said.
Greenon coach Gary Falkenbach said retiring No. 13 was the icing on the cake for Turner.
“She’s just a once-in-a-lifetime player,” Falkenbach said.
Turner grew up playing basketball with the Beavercreek Stars, beginning in third grade. She would travel all over the state on the weekends.
Beginning her freshman year, she started practicing on The Gun, a basketball shooting machine which helps players catch-and-shoot.
“It made so many more shots you could get up in an hour,” Turner said.
Four years and 2,000 points later, Turner is reaping the rewards of hard work. Every time she comes home, she’ll see her old jersey — the same one her older sister, Lauren, wore for four years before her — hanging at the school.
“It’s weird to think about it,” Turner said. “It’s definitely an honor.”
Falkenbach said Turner’s mark is left not just in the record books, but with his program as a whole. Her work ethic has worn off on his younger players, which will bring results for years to come.
“She’s a coach’s dream,” Falkenbach said. “She makes my job easier. I look like a genius at times, but it has nothing to do with me.”
