“When you go down 2-0 to anyone, you start to think what am I going to do?” Detrick said following his 6-2, 6-1 title match victory over Northeastern senior Tyler Haerr. “I adapted and that was key to not falling down any farther.”
Detrick’s serve and perseverance helped him to his first sectional title. He finished second last season.
“He’s a pretty solid player. He’s a lot more consistent now and that’s a big key to his game,” Detrick said of Haerr. “He’s a really great kid and I love playing him.”
Haerr, the No. 2 seed, also advanced to the district tournament. Haerr beat Brookville senior Corey Limbert 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals.
“I’m pretty happy with it,” Haerr said. “Obviously I’d like to be number one but I played pretty good. I feel pretty confident that I can hold my own in district. It’s more let’s enjoy it and let’s see what happens from here.”
Detrick beat Milton-Union senior Caleb Vincent 6-0, 6-0 in his semifinal.
All four advance to the district meet that starts Wednesday at Centerville High School.
“Personally I had a pretty rough tournament,” Detrick said of comparing his play to what’s needed at the district tournament. “I didn’t play up to what I could have. I’m going to have to focus to get ready for Wednesday. I know I have the caliber of game to play with the kids from Cincinnati and Mason, I just have to find it.”
