Darby grinds out win over Springfield

Springfield’s Saalih Muhammad and Danny Davis hooked up for a pair of fourth-quarter scores, but it was the other three quarters that did in the Wildcats in a 34-22 loss at Hilliard Darby late Friday.

The Wildcats (1-2) trailed 27-6 with about three minutes left when Muhammad and Davis connected for TDs of 21 and 36 yards.

Muhammad finished 15-of-27 passing for 212 yards and three touchdowns. He also hit Jeremiah Ward for a 20-yard score in the second quarter.

Darby (3-0) gained all of its 365 yards on the ground. The Panthers attempted one pass.

Springfield struggled to sustain drives, going 2-for-10 on third-down conversion attempts. The Wildcats were also penalized 11 times for 95 yards.

Davis continued his strong start with eight catches for 139 yards and the two TDs. He also rushed for 76 yards.

Defensively, Joe Cochran led Springfield with 12 tackles and DeSean Bradley added 10.

Tecumseh 21, Bellbrook 16: Brandon Morgan's TD runs of 45 and 52 yards gave the Arrows a 14-0 first-quarter lead they never lost. Tecumseh (1-2) was outgained 388-170 overall and finished 1-of-11 on third-down conversions, but won the battle on the scoreboard.

Morgan finished with 98 yards on four carries.

Defensively, Hunter Hensley (12), Isaiah Trimble (11), Brandon Castillo (11), Drew Riffell (11) and Garrett McCormick finished with (10) double-digit tackles.

Catholic Central 39, Bradford 8: Dominic DeWitt rushed for 190 yards and two TDs and quarterback Cossy Catanzaro threw a pair of TD passes for the Irish (2-1). Jake Fitzsimmons caught a TD and rushed for another against the Railroaders (0-3).

Mechanicsburg 35, Northwestern 0: Junior quarterback Kaleb Romero rushed for 133 yards (and threw for 32 more) to become the Indians' all-time leader in total offense. Romero has 5,456 yards in his career (2,699 rushing, 2,757 passing). Aeryton Erwin held the record with 5,380 (all rushing).

Philip Cook rushed for 101 yards and four TDs for Mechanicsburg (3-0).

Northwestern (2-1) was led by Trevor Gebby’s 95 yards passing and 43 rushing.

Urbana 6, Bellefontaine 0: Devin Trent hauled in Levi Boettcher's 25-yard TD pass in the second overtime to lift the Hillclimbers (1-2). Teammate Max Niswonger sealed the win by intercepting the Chieftains (0-3) on a third-down play.

Greeneview 28, East Clinton 13: Collin Matt rushed for 165 yards and two TDs in a battle of undefeateds.

Triad 45, Fairbanks 21: Trent McIntyre threw for 228 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 213 yards and two more scores for the Cardinals (1-2).
