What to know about that Wahlburgers chain that just opened in Cincy

Mark Wahlberg got the red-carpet treatment — literally — earlier this week when the actor visited the first southwest Ohio location for Wahlburgers in downtown Cincinnati. (The only other Ohio Wahlburgers is in Cleveland — for now.)

Mark Wahlberg was in Cincy this week to celebrate the new Wahlburgers

But there’s plenty more to know about the burger chain that he and brothers Paul (a chef) and Donnie (former boy-band heartthrob) Wahlberg founded in 2011.

Consider:

1.) Although Wahlburgers is best-known for its beef burgers, the chain last month unveiled with great fanfare its new “Impossible Burger,” which it described as “a 100 percent meatless option that is made entirely from plants and includes a four ounce patty, smoked cheddar, lettuce, caramelized onions, chili spiced tomatoes and Paul’s signature, house-made Wahlsauce.”

“Our customers have been asking for a delicious, meatless option and we are always looking for new ways to boost the Wahlburgers experience for our guests,” Paul Wahlberg said in a release.

Wahlburgers raved that the Impossible Burger “cooks, tastes and smells like ground beef from cows — but is made entirely from plants. It is produced without hormones, antibiotics, cholesterol or artificial flavors.”

But you don’t need to make the drive to Cincinnati to taste this product: The Butter Cafe at 1106 Brown St. also serves a burger made from the Impossible Beef, and the restaurant uses it in its Vegan Chili and Vegan Biscuits and Gravy, too.

2) Wahlburgers definitely has its sights set on more locations in Ohio. Late last year, the chain announced a partnership with Meijer to add more locations in the Buckeye state and in Michigan. Meijer is based in Grand Rapids but has a strong presence in the Dayton area and other regions in Ohio.

Meijer is “currently in early stages of planning regarding potential locations,” Meijer Public Relations Manager Joe Hirschmugl has told this news outlet. The restaurants will be built outside of Meijer stores, not inside, Hirschmugl said.

Wahlburgers also will bring its new food trucks to “select” Meijer locations, the burger chain’s officials said in a release.

3.) Wahlburgers serves its beef burgers in single, double and triple versions (a la Wendy’s, actually), but the menu broadens out considerably from there.

The restaurant offers a Portobello Sandwich, served with white cheddar and caramelized onions with lettuce and tomato; a Crispy Haddock Sandwich, made crispy by panko bread crumbs; Smoked Bacon Mac & Cheese topped with garlic Parmesan panko bread crumbs; a Thanksgiving Turkey Burger topped with stuffing, orange-cranberry sauce and roasted butternut squash.

Sides include Tater Tots and Sweet Potato Tots. Frappes and floats are available, including a Root Beer Float and a Creamsicle Float. There are also salads, bowls and chili.

And one must not forget the 20 beers on tap available at the new Cincinnati location.
