Southeastern Local Schools cancel first day due to heat

Southeastern Local Schools canceled the first day of school today because of the heat, Superintendent David Shea said.

He explained that their school buildings do not have air conditioning.

“I felt like it was going to be too hot to have the kids in the building today,” Shea said.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat index is expected to be between 95 and 100 degrees this afternoon. Temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 60s and lower 70s tonight.

Shea said that he is planning to wait until later today to decide if Southeastern Local Schools will have their first day of school tomorrow.

Despite the heat, students at Springfield City Schools began classes today. Tecumseh Local Schools also started today, but students are remote learning for the first quarter of the 2020-21 school year.

Students at Urbana City Schools are scheduled to start tomorrow.
