New Year’s Supermoon tonight

We will ring in the New Year with a "super" full moon, said Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini.

January’s spectacular sky: Mercury, meteors and 2 Supermoons

supermoon is a moon that becomes full around the time it is closest to Earth during orbit. A supermoon is said to be 30 percent brighter and 14 percent bigger than a mini or micomoon, Zontini said.

micomoon is a full or new moon that occurs when the moon is farthest from Earth in orbit.

This year the full moon on Jan. 1 becomes full at about 9:24 p.m.
"The moon will rise around 5:20 p.m. Monday night meaning it will be out big and bright all night long," Zontini said.

No clouds should block your view of this "super" full moon but it will be very cold. This full supermoon is the first of two in January.

On Jan. 31, another full supermoon will occur. Since it is the second full moon in one month, it will be known as a full Blue Supermoon, Zontini said.
