United Way funds to help fill void left by Tecumseh Y closing

SPRINGFIELD — The United Way hit its fundraising goal last year and raised nearly the same amount of money as in its previous campaign.

That was a relief to the United Way and its volunteers when it came time to dole out the money to agencies and across-the-board cuts weren’t needed, Executive Director Doug Lineberger said.

But that didn’t mean the volunteer committees who recommend how to distribute the money took the job lightly.

“They really focused on the impact that each one of the programs has shown,” Lineberger said.

The United Way of Clark, Champaign and Madison Counties began distributing money last month to programs provided by 50 agencies.

Clark County programs shared more than $927,000, Champaign County groups more than $189,000 and Madison County agencies more than $145,000.

One change in Clark County involved the more than $19,000 donors had designated for the Tecumseh YMCA.

After the Y dissolved, the United Way asked the National Trail Parks and Recreation District if it could offer services to youth in western Clark County. It also contacted the donors to inform them of the change.

“We wanted to fill that void,” Lineberger said.

National Trail will work with elementary schools in western Clark County for an after-school program that includes traditional and nontraditional sports, as well as nutrition and lifestyle information.

“We just wanted to bring more physical fitness to the kids to make it a lifelong change for them,” said Penny Dunbar, NTPRD recreation specialist.

In Champaign County, two recipients combined their funding request into one. Last year Community Mercy MedAssist and Mercy Well Child each received about $16,000.

This year MedAssist received $32,000 to work with Well Child to offer prescription assistance to children and their adult family members.

Well Child previously used its United Way funding to provide vaccinations but has seen a growing demand for prescription assistance, said Dave Lamb, Community Mercy Health Partners spokesman.

“It is responding to the needs,” Lamb said.

Lineberger thanked the volunteers and donors for their generosity.

“That’s where it begins and ends and we’re very appreciative of that support,” he said.
