America’s love affair with the automobile and other vehicles, which began at the start of the 20th century, continued into the Depression and beyond.

A new economy based on oil began that replaced Springfield’s old interurban rail lines with sleek new gasoline-powered busses.

It created new business and employment opportunities, like Bonded Oil Company, founded by Paul Deer in 1932 and known today as Speedway.
