Smith retains position as Springfield Twp. fiscal officer

Incumbent Mark Smith defeated challenger Barbara Fletcher with roughly 55 percent of the vote, according to unofficial election results posted by the Clark County Board of Elections.

Smith was first appointed fiscal officer for the township after his predecessor Mike Hively passed away in April. Before Smith was appointed, he said he sold his business and was looking for a new opportunity to use his business experiences.

“As a former business owner of a medical service company with 30 years experience in business development and operations, I will rely on my personal experiences that I feel made us a successful organization,” Smith said in the Springfield News Sun Voters Guide.

Smith said one of his reasons for running is to make sure the township makes the most of the services they provide with the resources they receive.

“My objective is to bridge all these departments with the necessary financial information to include budget planning and reporting that is needed for our leadership to make worthwhile long lasting decisions,” Smith said in the voters guide.

Fletcher, a retired banker and part-time township office manager challenged Smith for the seat.

Fletcher said she has over 35 years of experience in banking and investments including audits, lending, and management.

She said she wanted to, “review all previous audits to verify all recommendations from the State Auditor are being followed.”

One of the biggest challenges the township is facing is the reduced income from state and local entities, according to Fletcher.

“It is essential that the Fiscal Officer maintain communication with the Department Heads and the Trustees,” Fletcher said in the voters guide. “Procedures and expenditures must continually be updated, reviewed, and approved to stay within budget parameters with information provided by the Fiscal Officer.”
