“The public should take extra precautions in securing their property,” said Sgt. Dan Harris with the Springfield Police Division. “Devices such as tongue locks and cable locks can be effective in securing utility trailers so they can’t be hooked up and towed away.”

If these locks are not available, owners can try parking another vehicle in front of their trailer to prevent theft, Harris said. Owners may also place a visible marking on their property to make it easier to identify and locate in case it is stolen.
“Trailers are difficult to identify at a glance and often don’t have serial numbers,” Harris said.
Harris said ATVs can be secured with a wheel lock or stored indoors to prevent theft.

Owners of either trailers or ATVs are strongly encouraged to take pictures of their property so they can be used to locate in the event a theft might happen.
