The total amount the commission spent was more than $315,000.
The amount of salt typically used in a winter season varies, said Springfield City Services Director Chris Moore. On average the city uses 3,400 tons of salt each winter. Last winter, the city used 3,073 tons. The city currently has about 2,500 tons of salt in storage, and records show the most salt used in a single winter was about 6,500.
“Preparation is key when it comes to keeping roadways clear and safe,” said Moore. “Requesting the funds and placing the order now allows us to participate in the state cooperative salt purchasing program with the Ohio Department of Transportation.”
The Cooperative Purchasing Program offers Ohio counties, townships, municipalities, school districts, public libraries, regional park districts, and other political subdivisions the benefits and costs savings of buying goods and services through state contracts, according to the Ohio Department of Administrative Services.
The commission voted Tuesday night.
