Woman bitten while trying to break up dog fight in Champaign County

A woman’s hand was bit while trying to break up a fight between two dogs Wednesday night.

The dogs were fighting over food when the woman was bit, according to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident was reported around 9:20 p.m. in the 7300 block of East U.S. 36 in Union Twp.

Information about the extent of the hand injury was not available Thursday.

A CareFlight medical helicopter was placed on standby for the woman, but was not needed, a Champaign County Sheriff’s Office dispatcher said Wednesday.

The woman was taken to Mercy Health - Urbana Hospital, where her condition was not known.

Initial reports indicated that the woman was suffering from blood loss from injuries to her hands and arms and that she applied a tourniquet to herself.
