Pike Twp. is seeking a new 1.5-mill, five-year property tax levy on the May 6 ballot.

Trustee Greg Kaffenbarger said the $114,870 that would be generated annually by the tax will be used for road repairs and equipment.

The annual cost to the owner of a $100,000 home would be about $53.

Kaffenbarger said several roads have been identified as most in need of repairs. Those are Stott Road between North Hampton and Dialton roads and between Ansbaugh Road and Ohio 235, Short Road and Studebaker Road.

The needed repairs include paving, leveling and widening of the roads.

“Additional repairs need to be made to North Hampton Road, Spence Road, Ulery Road and Bischoff Road,” Kaffenbarger said. “Last year’s budget allowed the township to repair some roads that were in major need of repair, but there was no money left to put towards additional repairs or for updated equipment.”

He said the township does not plan to replace all equipment at once.

The last new tax approved for these costs was passed in 1988 and the money generated by that levy, originally for 2 mills, is fixed, Kaffenbarger said.

“The costs involved with maintaining and repairing the roads continue to increase,” he said. “In the last 10 years, the cost of salt and gravel has doubled. Asphalt has increased 120 percent and ‘chip and seal’ has increased 400 percent.”

The tax levy affects all Pike Twp. residents, excluding the village of North Hampton.
