New Springfield restaurant offers curbside service, delivery

J&J’s Phat Head Foods, a new Springfield evening restaurant, is offering curbside service and delivery.

John Hartman and James Smith, co-owners and Springfield natives, decided to start the restaurant because of their love for food and desire to own a food truck.

Their desire turned into a reality when they were cooking together during a football game at their apartment complex.

Residents saw and smelled their wings and asked if they could buy some — that’s when they decided they would go into the food business.

Smith explained that their restaurant is, “more like a food truck in a building.”

J&J’s Phat Head Foods does not have a seating area. They are located in the lower level of the Bushnell Building and use a community kitchen.

They do take orders there, but the best way to place an order is by calling 937-536-5568 or 937-561-4271, sending a Facebook message, or using DoorDash.

“We’re just trying to get a foothold here because we know we sell quality food,” Smith said.

Best selling items include wings and potato wedges with made-from-scratch sauces. Other items include chicken Alfredo French bread pizza, pork Philly, chicken Philly, and hamburgers.

The two are not operating the restaurant alone.

“Our wives and our kids are in here helping us,” Hartman said. “It’s definitely a family business.”

On Thanksgiving, J&J’s Phat Head Foods served 126 free meals to more than 40 families in the area that were in need.

“It’s just the right thing to do,” Hartman said.

Smith added, “We made a ton of people smile and a ton of people said thank you. That’s all we need.”

In the future, the co-owners are looking to expand to UberEats, buy a food truck, and test the third-shift market.

“I know the area,” Hartman said. “I know my food stacks up pretty well.”

J&J’s Phat Head Foods is open 6 p.m. to midnight Thursday-Sunday at 16 N. Fountain Ave.

They will sell family friendly food such as hot dogs, hamburgers, chili, macaroni and cheese, hard-tack candy, and buckeyes during Holiday in the City on Saturday.
