New German Twp. police chief takes over

The German Twp. police department has a new chief.

Michael Stitzel officially assumed the position as chief effective Jan. 1. He replaces Chief Bill Dickerson, who retired from the department after 43 years of service. Dickerson will assist the department as an auxiliary officer during his retirement, Stitzel said.

Stitzel has worked as a police officer for 19 years, eight of which have been with German Twp. police. The department has 11 officers, a mixture of full- and part-time and auxiliary employees. As a department that commonly trains and supplies officers to other jurisdictions, Stitzel said he is always looking for quality applicants.

As the new chief, Stitzel said one of his main priorities will be to supply more community outreach, and to make sure residents know that officers are there to serve and protect.

“We just hope that we can continue to keep the citizens of German Twp. safe and my goal is to be more proactive in the schools,” he said. “I want to try to keep an officer there as much as possible.”

The township is home to the Northwestern Local Schools district. Stitzel said he would like to work with the district to have a school resource officer available for safety in each of the buildings.
