Robinson was responsible for “The Plantalac,” a 1989 Cadillac Seville covered with plants growing on the car. After selling the car in an auction, Robinson went to work on his next creation.
“[The Plantalac] didn’t have a heavy enough suspension so when I thought I’d do something else I said, ‘We’re going to do something that’s got a good suspension,’ ” Robinson said. “We figured a bus would be good because it’s got a lot of space and it’s got a heavy suspension.”
After purchasing a bus off of Craig’s List in September 2009, Robinson started working on the bus in February. But the bus didn’t start blooming into its current state until May.
Robinson said seeing people’s reactions to the bus has been funny for him.
“[People] can’t look at it once,” Robinson said. “When you’re going down the road especially they have to look at it twice and you see them pointing and everything ... it’s just been pretty neat to watch the expression because there’s not another one like it.”
Robinson said the bus is easy to drive, but with the flowers growing on the side it is harder to use the side–view mirrors.
Inside the bus is a water tank that runs through the roof of the bus. The tank powers the sprinklers on the top of the bus, allowing for the plants to grow without too much daily attention from Robinson.
“We don’t do hardly anything to it,” Robinson said. “We water it if it’s sunny out every two or three days, but since it’s been raining I can’t really remember the last time we watered it.”
Robinson wants the bus to be in local parades this summer and said it usually stays in the parking lot.
For the next project, Robinson wants to work on an airplane or a motorcycle.
