Motorcyle rider who collided with sheriff’s vehicle is Dayton firefighter

SUGARCREEK TWP., Greene County - The motorcycle rider whose motorbike slid into an oncoming Greene County Sheriff’s vehicle in the 700 block of Shepard Road is a Dayton Firefighter, according to WHIO-TV.

The biker, identified as Eric Jones, refused medical treatment at the scene. Sugarcreek Township police told WHIO-TV that Jones was arrested for operating a vehicle while under the influence and failure to control.

Greene County Sheriff’s Sgt. Charlie Barrett said the accident at 7:38 p.m., Monday.

Sheriff deputies said Jones failed to negotiate a curve in the road. They believe Jones deliberately laid the bike down to avoid striking the sheriff’s vehicle head-on.

The cruiser had some slight damage to the front-end and the motorbike was removed by a tow truck.

“It could have been worse,” Barrett said.

The cruiser’s video camera captured the crash. The video shows Jones coming around a curve on Shephard Road, the bike crosses the yellow line, and then he loses control, according to WHIO-TV.

“It was obvious that the operator was out of control,” Lt. Charley Stepp told WHIO-TV. “He laid the bike down and it traveled into the lane and hit the deputy’s vehicle front and center.”

Deputy Donna Dempsey was looking for an address when he cruiser was struck. She was only going 35 mph in a 55 mph zone, deputies told WHIO-TV.

Medics were called and treated Jones for scraps to his legs and arms. Investigators said Jones’ shorts and flip flops offered him little protection.

“The more clothing you have on, the better off you’re going to be when something like this happens,” Stepp said.

Jones has been a Dayton firefighters since 2005, according to WHIO-TV. He is not in jail and could face additional charges.
