H1N1 vaccine clinic opens early, runs smoothly

SPRINGFIELD — More than 2,100 individuals were vaccinated against the H1N1 virus Tuesday, Oct. 27, during Clark County’s first public swine flu vaccination clinic.

The clinic, held at the Clark County Fairgrounds, was to open at noon, but when more than 350 people were in line by 11 a.m., Clark County Health District officials opened the clinic early, administering shots to children under 5, pregnant women, children with underlying medical conditions and household caregivers of infants — and individuals considered at very high risk for complications from the flu.

A few individuals who did not meet the high-risk criteria had to be turned away, but they complied without incident, said Diane Van Auker, health district spokeswoman.

“I had to tell them that they would need to wait for a later clinic (that would be open to the general public),” she said. “People have been very understanding.”

The health district had prepared for the worst when it came to crowds and panic, but were pleasantly surprised as a steady stream of individuals, both local and from out of town, made their way through the line, Van Auker said.

Springfield resident Nancy McHugh had the same reaction.

“It was something I was dreading,” she said after her 4-year-old daughter, Arden McHugh-Braham, received her shot, “but the whole thing ran seamlessly. The Clark County Health District deserves credit.”

“I was scared. It hurt,” 4-year-old Hannah Duff said after she and her two younger sisters received the shots. Her mother, Jennifer Duff, said she had been waiting for the vaccine to finally be available and was relieved the wait was over.

Expectant mothers Brooke Hoover and Amy Reinking, both from Troy, expressed their relief as they exited the Arts and Crafts Building where the shots were being administered.

“I’m 10 weeks pregnant and have been very worried about getting the swine flu,” Reinking said. “I’m a substitute teacher in Troy City Schools and was worried about being around children.

“I’m relieved I’m protected.”

The health district plans to hold additional Tuesday H1N1 clinics providing they receive more vaccines.
