Free Kroger shuttle service starts today

A free shuttle service will transport residents from the south side of Springfield to the Kroger located at 2728 E. Main St. beginning today.

The Abilities Connection, a non-profit organization, has partnered with the city of Springfield to provide south side residents with access to food and groceries after the Kroger located at 1822 S. Limestone St. closed on Tuesday.

Funding for the shuttle service will come directly from Kroger - as a part of a deal the city reached with the grocery chain on Feb. 19.

Kroger is contributing $31,500 to support shuttle services.

Here is the shuttle schedule: 

Saturday and Sunday  

1 p.m. -  Shuttle departs from the South Limestone Street Kroger for the East Main Street Kroger

2:10 p.m. - Shuttle departs from the East Main Street Kroger for the South Limestone Street Kroger

2:30 p.m. - Shuttle departs from the South Limestone Street Kroger for the East Main Street Kroger

3:40 p.m. - Shuttle departs from the East Main Street Kroger for the South Limestone Street Kroger

4 p.m. - Shuttle arrives at the South Limestone Street Kroger

Wednesday 

4:30 p.m. - Shuttle departs from the South Limestone Street Kroger for the East Main Street Kroger

5:40 p.m. -Shuttle departs from the East Main Street Kroger for the South Limestone Street Kroger

6:30 p.m. - Shuttle departs from the South Limestone Street Kroger for the East Main Street Kroger

7:40 p.m. - Shuttle departs from the East Main Street Kroger for the South Limestone Street Kroger

8 p.m. - Shuttle arrives at the South Limestone Street Kroger

According to the Clark County Combined Health District, neighborhoods south of downtown Springfield are considered a food desert with the closure - as the closest grocery store is about three miles away.

Second Harvest Food Bank will also deploy eight mobile food pantries to the south side, in an attempt to combat the effects of the closure.
