The Clark County Sheriff’s Office will be giving out free drug disposal kits for the first time this year during the Clark County Fair.

The kits are easy to use and deactivate medications in a matter of a few minutes — which keeps them out of the wrong hands.

“We really encourage people to utilize these,” said Detective Brian Melchi. “These are a great tool to be able to use for people who might have a small amount of medication who don’t want to come out to the drug take back that we do twice a year.”

To use the kits, someone puts a small amount of pills into a pouch, fills the pouch half way up with water, seals the pouch and shakes the contents. A compound inside the pouch deactivates the medication and then the pouch can be dropped in any trash can.

In addition to pills, people can also put liquid and pain patches into the pouches.

Melchi said the kits were donated to the sheriff’s office through the Rx Abuse Leadership Initiative.

RALI is an alliance of organizations in the state that focus on programs to help address substance abuse. One of the ways they do this is by donating the drug disposal kits to law enforcement agencies.

Melchi said deputies will take 1,200 kits to the fair, but there will also be kits at the main window at the sheriff’s office downtown and in deputy patrol cars.

“If deputies are out on calls and a citizen of Clark County requests one of these, the deputy should be able to give one to them,” he said.

Melchi said the disposal kits feed into one of the sheriff’s office goals of getting more drugs off the street.

The sheriff’s office currently oversees three drug drop boxes in the county — one of which, is located at the sheriff’s office downtown is open 24/7.

The sheriff’s office also participates in Drug Take Back Days during the year. This spring during National Drug Take Back Day, deputies collected 347 pounds of medication.

The drug disposal kits will be handed out by deputies at the D.A.R.E. booth every day during the fair.

The fair runs through Friday.
