Fees for late renewals in effect

SPRINGFIELD — Forgetting to renew a driver’s license or vehicle registration now comes with a price — $20.

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles instituted a $20 late fee on Oct. 1, 2009, for license or registration renewals that are more than seven days late.

Lawmakers added the late fee in the transportation budget and the money goes to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, BMV spokeswoman Lindsey Bohrer said.

Several other fees also increased at the same time, she said, including for eye screenings, personalized plate registrations and temporary tags.

Some vehicles such as motorcycles, mopeds and noncommercial trailers used seasonally are exempt from the late fee.

The fee also will be waived if a birthday falls on a legal holiday when BMV offices are closed.

The bureau has included the late fee in registration renewal notices for several months and issued news releases about the changes.

“A lot of people don’t pay attention to the changes until it applies to them,” Bohrer said.

Sheila Rice is a deputy registrar who runs a license agency in the Southern Village Shopping Center. Some drivers have been surprised by the new late fee, she said, especially those who might have multiple or seasonal cars they only drive in the summer.

She recommended drivers take advantage of the ability to renew their registration 90 days early.

“Seven days after your birthday sure comes up fast,” Rice said.
