Congressman Jordan tells students how values led him to D.C.

Jordan has Q&A at Emmanuel Christian Academy

SPRINGFIELD — During a question-and-answer session that covered a wide range of topics, Congressman Jim Jordan talked about his life and his job during a visit to Emmanuel Christian Academy on Tuesday morning.

The Republican congressman, who represents Ohio’s 4th district, referred to himself as a “country boy from Champaign County” with a Christian upbringing.

He graduated from Graham High School as a four-time state wrestling champion.

Jordan went on to wrestle for the University of Wisconsin and won two NCAA championship titles. He did not, however, consider becoming a politician until after he completed his graduate degrees in education and law at Ohio State University and Capital University, respectively.

“You get married and have kids, and you get tired of the government taking your money and ignoring your values in the process,” he said.

Jordan, who was ranked by the National Journal as the most conservative politician in Washington, talked about his commitment to families and his pro-life work.

“You do what you think is the right thing, and there are people in Congress who are against you,” he said. “We’ve got the truth on our side.”

Jordan also encouraged students to work hard and said that “what you’re interested in is where the Lord God leads you.”

“It’s nice to see someone who has our background and (similar) goals and outlook on things,” said Megan Detrick, an Emmanuel Christian senior who serves as the class secretary.

After his Q&A, fourth-grade students lined up to ask him questions about his job and get autographs.

“This is how it’s supposed to work,” said Daren Cotter of Fifth Third Bank, a parent and school board member. “He works for us, and it’s important for students to understand that. (Politicians) need to hear from us and learn from us as citizens.”
