Clark and Champaign County crews are preparing for the winter season with thousands of tons of salt.

WHIO Storm Center 7 forecast called for a winter mix to fall Thursday. A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for the entire Miami Valley for Wednesday beginning at 10 p.m. and was expected to last until Thursday at 12 p.m.

The forecasts calls for the wintry mix to fall early Thursday causing roads to be slick during morning commutes.

Those responsible for keeping roads passable in Springfield, Clark and Champaign counties said they are prepared for snow and ice.

“We’ve got about 5,000 tons of salt on hand in the barns and about another 3,000 under contract,” Clark County Engineer Johnathan Burr said. “We like having salt on our grounds and having it full starting out. Sometimes when you get hit it hard (with weather) it kind of strains the delivery process. That way we got it on hand and ready.”

Burr said his agency is responsible for 310 miles of county roads and has more than 20 snow-plow drivers who are ready for the season. In case of severe weather, there can be upwards of 25 drivers hitting the streets.

Burr said his department has to be prepared.

“Typically, the small snows impact traffic more than a big snow. People aren’t ready for it yet with the first now of the season, Burr said.”

Champaign County Engineer Stephen McCall said salting roads is one of the most important jobs his office handles.

“We plan for the worst winter that we ever had and hope for the best,” he said.

Champaign County finished last winter’s season with about 700 tons of salt, McCall said. Another 1,400 tons of salt was delivered just this week to the county.

“On average, we usually use about 2,000 tons a year and we mix that with the grit,” he said.

The grit, which is like sand, is good for traction. The Champaign County Engineer’s Office is responsible for taking care of about 240 miles of road and many have sharp curves, McCall said. The grit helps keep cars on slippery roads.

Springfield City Service Director Chris Moore told the News-Sun the city is also prepared for the winter weather.

“We have approximately 2,500 tons of salt on hand. Our plan, as with any storm, is to monitor the forecast and schedule plow drivers to begin the appropriate snow and ice removal activities as soon as conditions warrant,” he said.

It’s important for motorist to be patient when driving around salt trucks, the three men said. It’s a big job with lots of variables, Burr said.

“Give them some room and please stay out of their way,” Burr said. “They are trying to get the road cleared for you.”

Plow truck drivers are traveling at around 25 miles per hour, he said.

McCall said plow truck drivers work long shifts and need space.

“They got a lot of things to deal with as they are driving and also when you’re on roads with ice and snow be careful,” McCall said. “Give them room and time.”

AAA advises drivers to be careful when driving in winter weather. Tips include accelerating gently, paying close attention on hills, avoid slamming on brakes and keeping an emergency kit in the car.
