Champaign Co. experiencing home daycare provider shortage

The Champaign County Job and Family Services daycare program is in need of home care providers.

Currently, many of the daycare centers in the county have waiting lists and there are only four home care providers, according to the agency’s daycare case worker, Lindsey Guidera.

“There are lot of families are that aren’t able to find childcare when they need it,” Guidera said.

She explained the agency is really struggling to find people to fill the second and third shifts.

“It’s a challenge to get people who want go that direction,” she said.

While anyone can offer daycare from their home, Guidera pointed out that to get clients through her agency you must be licensed through the state and comply with its rules.

She said ideal candidates for the job are people who are already home with their children and want to make some extra money by watching a few more.

Home care providers can look after up to six children, and Guidera said it can bring in as much as $600 a week.

She said the benefits of providing care through The Department of Job and Family Services is that the money is guaranteed, since it is coming from the state, and reimbursements for food costs are also offered.
