New Carlisle title office will remain open with new hours

The New Carlisle title office branch of the Clark County Title Department will begin new hours next week and could be relocating in the future, Clark County Clerk Melissa Tuttle said.

What it’s not doing is closing, Tuttle said.

Rumors have circulated in recent weeks that the western Clark County office will close, Clark County Commissioner Lowell McGlothin said at Wednesday’s commission meeting. The office is not closing, Tuttle said, and will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, beginning Monday. It will shut down only from noon to 12:30 p.m. for lunch, she said.

The office was previously scheduled to close at 4:30 p.m., but there has been a line and employees have stayed as long as 45 minutes longer to serve customers, she said.

“People can come in not have to worry about the doors closing,” Tuttle said. “I’m not worried about having overtime or having my staff miss appointments or something because they can’t get out of there on time.”

The topic was brought up at Monday’s joint meeting between Mad River Twp. trustees, New Carlisle City Council, the Tecumseh Local Board of Education, among others. McGlothin has heard the rumor from about six different people, he said, but dispelled it at the meeting.

“Not only do New Carlisle people use it, but also Bethel Twp., Pike Twp. as well as Champaign County and Miami County people,” McGlothin said. “A lot of people utilize it. It’s very convenient for them instead of driving into Springfield or Huber Heights.”

The main title office is located on the first floor of the Clark County Municipal Court and County Offices building at 50 E. Columbia St., Springfield.

The title office bureau at 430 N. Main St. in New Carlisle has been open since 1988. The rent is currently about $1,000 per month, Tuttle said. The lease has been in place for a decade and will be in place through the end of the year, she said.

“I feel as a duty to the taxpayers I want to look at other options for venues and have a competitive space,” Tuttle said.

A new location would also allow the title office to review and process new or expired passport applications, Tuttle said. They’re currently accepted at the downtown title office, but not in New Carlisle, she said.

The main office increased the number of passports it reviewed last year because of staffing at the downtown post office, she said.

“I think that’s something as the clerk of courts I’d like to extend to the people in New Carlisle as well,” Tuttle said.
