“The fact that we were able to co-locate so many essential support services really is going to allow students to connect quicker and help them succeed,” said Associate Dean of Students for Student Success and Retention Jon Duraj.
Students were seen last week taking advantage of the COMPASS center — and it was only the first week of school. Senior O’Jeanique Washington, from Columbus, said she plans to use the center often this year.
“I enjoy the space,” Washington said. “I like having the white boards in the room. All my friends and classmates have scheduled time to go in there and do some (economy homework).”
Duraj said in previous years the student services provided by COMPASS were available to students across campus. He said the move to one location will help students take advantage of the programs and services.
“There was not a lot of synergy around the offices,” Duraj said. “The student experience is multifaceted. A student may come in for academic support but may benefit from other support.
“Classes started Monday and we have first-year students all the way to our senior-student leaders in here connecting with different opportunities.”
Washington said she understands why other students have decided to take advantage of COMPASS so early in the school year.
“The school year so far has been hectic,” Washington said. “I have a paper due (soon) and already have to start reading.
“I am going to be in here a lot,” Washington said of COMPASS.
