Former UD football player and USFTL Hall of Fame inductee dies

A former University of Dayton football player who was inducted into the United States Flag and Touch Football League Hall of Fame died Jan. 21

Charles "Cutter" McElligott of Oakwood was 77.

McElligott, originally from Cleveland, played football at UD from 1962-64.

Around short stints and tryouts with the San Diego Chargers and Buffalo Bills, McElligott flourished playing semi-pro football for more than a decade and competitive touch football until the age of 50, according to his obituary. In 1982, Chuck was inducted into the USFTL Football Hall of Fame. Later, in 1999, he was also inducted into the American Football Association's Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Off the football field, McElligott had a long career as an art director in the graphic design industry.

He is survived by his wife, Armonde; his daughter Elizabeth (Jason) Moore of Columbus; his daughter Mary Crowe of Dayton; and son Charles (Casey) McElligott of Chatham, NJ

Visitation for McElligott will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24. Funeral proceedings will follow at Tobias Funeral Home at 5471 Far Hills Ave., Dayton.
