Program can cut your risk online and on your phone

Facebook, online sex, identity theft, phishing, cyberbullies, sexting, viruses — these are words that strike terror in the hearts of parents, grandparents, teachers and almost anyone who uses a smart phone or computer. But there is help!

On Tuesday, March 8, the Community Health Foundation will present Cyber Safety from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Springfield High School in the Cafetorium.

This free, lively, highly participatory and practical workshop will be presented by Shannon Martin Morano, a training and curriculum director.

Computer security specialist Jeremy Goheen of Storm IT Solutions also will be on hand to answer your technical questions. During this program we will explore:

• Home computer and network security;

• Online safety, including shopping and banking security and social networking pitfalls; and

• Mobile phones, including Bluetooth and GPS security and the ramifications of illegal behaviors such as sexting.

While we all recognize the many positive uses of current technology, we must understand the very real dangers associated with being online, especially for our kids, who are particularly vulnerable.

This workshop will help adults and teens discover how to enjoy social networking sites without leaving themselves vulnerable to predators and bullies.

Parents will learn how to implement internet controls, privacy settings and other personal-information protections. Everyone — from high school students to senior citizens — will take home lots of practical ideas and skills, as well as numerous cyber-safety resources.

All attendees will be eligible for door prizes which will include a gift certificate for in-home online security and safety training by a skilled cyber-security professional.

Although the program is free, registration is required. Call 328-9575 or register on line at www.community-health-foundation.org. At the home page, click on “Register for Cyber Safety.”
