Out with the stiff, in with the “messy” for bridal updos

Local brides are turning to celebrities for wedding-day hairstyle inspiration.

Engaged on Christmas day to Nick Hoyng, Mandy “Myka” Barnes got a big jump start on her wedding day look recently.

Bridal books often encourage brides to have hair trial runs about a month before their big days, but as a hairstylist, Barnes has a leg up for her ceremony in June of 2013.

Barnes’ hair trial all started with a “messy” updo from Courtney Collins, who like Barnes is a hairstylist at Michael’s Salon and Spa in Centerville.

Messy is all the rage, the pair explained.

“I don’t want to look like I am going to prom,” Barnes said. “(Brides are) really focusing on celebrities and what’s in style.”

Eva Longoria, Jessica Alba and Blake Lively are among the actresses many local brides turn to for inspiration. Collins said her clients want natural looking styles whether they wear their hair up, down or use hair extensions or not.

“Everyone is asking for braids, twist or not-so perfect updos,” Collins added. “It’s not so stiff. It is more natural.”

Tara Linthicum, a hairstylist with Reflections Salon & Day Spa in Springboro, said loose, flowy curls are in vouge.

“It is what everyone is getting done,” she said. “No one wants their hair tight and sticking to the scalp. It is not the ’90s anymore.”

Likewise, there is a lightness when it comes to makeup.

“People what to look more natural,” she said. “They are not going to do real heavy makeup.”

Linthicum said tough economic times are preventing many brides from getting cosmetic procedures like Botox to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but there are plenty of options to improve one’s appearance.

When it comes to skin care, esthetician and makeup artist Tracy W. Smith of Beaute Box Day Spa in downtown Dayton said facials and a menu of hair removal treatments go a long way in helping a bride achieve a flawless glow.

Facials clear out impurities, nourish and hydrate the skin and help improve the longevity and appearance of makeup.

“They want to feel good, this is their special day.” Collins said. “They want to feel sexy. They want to feel beautiful.”

Facials are about $75 at Beaute Box.

Brent Johnson, co-owner of Square One Salon in Dayton and Centerville said eyelash and eyebrow color tinting and 3D extensions are among the biggest trends in bridal beauty.

“Ladies are all about their eyelashes right now,” Johnson said.

He said 3D eyelashes give brides lash intensity and thickness their entire weekend and beyond.

Bonded directly to each eyelash, they typically last four to six weeks and cost about $175 at Square One.

Airbrushed makeup for photo shoot quality results and Fake Bake sunless spray-on tan also are popular in his shops.

“The Fake Bake is a nice way to get a nice summer tan without damaging the skin,” Johnson said.

Johnson recommended consulting with beauty experts on when procedures should be done. Hair color should be done a week or two before the wedding for instance. A practice run well in advance is critical.

“We just want to make sure we are hitting it 100 percent on the day of,” he said.
