Create an abstract art piece with toilet paper rolls

When you use up all the toilet paper on the roll what do you do with the empty roll? Do you throw it in the trash can or recycle bin? What if I told you, you could make a beautiful, abstract art piece with your empty rolls of toilet paper?

Yes, it sounds a bit odd, but this is a great way to recycle some of your trash and create a piece that can be turned into whatever you dream up. For just $4.14, this is also a great way to fill up a large empty wall space for cheap.

You will need

Purchased:

• Black Spray Paint - $4.14 at Michael’s Arts and Crafts

Items I already had around the house:

• Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks

• Scissors

• Pencil

• Ruler

• Clear Spray Sealer

Directions

1. Collect your empty toilet paper rolls over a period of time. The size of the finished piece will determine how many rolls you’ll need.

2. To make this piece, you need to cut each roll into 1-inch circles. So, flatten each roll and measure one side into 1-inch strips.

3. Using scissors, cut out the strips from each roll.

4. Once all strips are cut, open them back up so that they are open circles again. Lay them out so that not one circle is touching another.

5. Keeping your circles slightly bent (they will resemble a leaf or petal shape) begin gluing together your artwork. For mine, I am creating a circular piece that resembles a dahlia.

6. Start with five pieces, gluing one point of each together so that it resembles a five-point flower.

7. From there, fill in the gaps with more “petals” and continue growing around the five points make it larger with each turn.

8. Once you are happy with the shape of your piece, use your spray paint to paint the entire piece. Make sure to get the inside and outside of your pieces. This will take 2-3 coats.

9. After the spray paint has dried completely, spray a coat of clear sealer over the piece and let dry.

10. Hang up your piece on the wall and enjoy.
