Is there a better title for the opening of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-17 season?
“A Triumphant Return” will have multiple meanings as prize-winning guest pianist Spencer Myer highlights the Masterworks opener at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Clark State Performing Arts Center.
Maestro Peter Stafford Wilson, Springfield Symphony Orchestra conductor, has a special reason to be excited for this concert.
“Spencer Myer dazzled our audience several seasons ago with his inspired performance of Rachmaninoff’s third piano concerto. He returns to perform possibly my favorite of all the Mozart Piano Concerti, a segment of the repertoire that we will explore more thoroughly in coming seasons,” he said.
Myer performs all over the country with various orchestras and philharmonics, and he also plays in a duo with cellist Adrian Daurov.
Selections will include Mendelssohn: “Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage,” Mozart: “Concerto in d, K. 466” and Schumann: “Symphony No. 1, op. 38 in Bb ‘Spring.’”
The concert will also offer a special connection to Springfield. Myer will perform on a Steinway & Sons piano, one of the premiere instruments of its kind.
Springfield-based O.S. Kelly manufactures piano plates and parts that are the foundation for grand pianos for Steinway from its facility on North Street.
The evening will begin at 6:45 p.m. with the performance prelude in the Davidson Grand Lobby and the opening notes program in the Turner Studio Theatre.
