For a lot of people the summer sky brings the heat. For up-and-coming local singer/songwriter Mati Lyons, the sky’s on fire.

Inspired by the setting sun following a run one evening, Lyons wrote her first original song, “Sky’s on Fire,” then recorded and released it in 2015. The 2014 Catholic Central graduate and Springfield resident is spending this summer performing it and a mix of covers and originals around the area and in Michigan.

Following a slot in last weekend’s Troy Strawberry Festival, Lyons will perform at the Saturday, June 11, LGBT Pride Festival at Springfield City Hall Plaza. The event is from noon to 4:30 p.m.

Listening to Disney Radio as a child led Lyons to performing.

“I would sing and dance around the house all the time, so I guess you could say that is when I first fell in love with music and singing,” she said.

Her first public performance was at Springfield’s Got Talent as a high school sophomore, leading to finalist slots in Ohio Idol and Ohio’s Has Talent. She’s turned down other opportunities along the way, saying she didn’t feel quite ready and wanting her voice to mature.

Lyons said she would do auditions secretly because she didn’t want others to know how important having a music career was to her. She’s learning to play guitar to help with her writing.

She recorded “Sky’s on Fire” in Los Angeles with a professional producer. The song has gotten attention, gaining a finalist slot for the 2016 John Lennon International Songwriting Contest. Lyons is working on following it up.

“I have many original songs ready to be produced that are in my songwriting folder right now. I just need to get into the studio now to get them done,” Lyons said.

“I am also busy right now getting my name and music out, and I am doing a lot of upcoming shows, music events, fashion events and upcoming interviews that I have scheduled. One of my short-term goals is to definitely get an EP or full album out this year and long-term goal is to win a Grammy (Award).”
