Gifts for gearheads

There’s still plenty of shopping time left for Christmas, so the gearheads at Wheels put our collective heads together, and we’re gonna help you find just that right gift for the car guy or girl you’re shopping for.

It gets pretty cold around here in January, but it’s warm and sunny in Arizona, so how about a trip to the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction at Scottsdale, Jan. 18-24?

You can snag the Car Collectors Dream Package at the Scottsdale Resort & Athletic Club where you can book from two to eight nights in a villa, just minutes from the auction. The packages includes a two- to eight-night stay in a one-bedroom villa, concierge service to arrange tickets and transportation to the auction, 10 percent off spa treatments and, of course, complimentary use of the Scottsdale Athletic Club. Prices range from about $700 to more than $2,600. For more information, visit www.scottsdale resortandathleticclub.com.

Closer to home, you can buy a season ticket package to the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky. You get great seats for the NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series races and the IZOD Indy Car and Firestone Indy Lights series races.

Packages range from $139 to $230 per ticket, but also have extras included. They include the right to reserve better seats, an optional payment plan, free admission to Nationwide Series practice day, VIP Parking — which can be exchanged for general camping admission — cold pit passes and discounts on the purchase of additional race tickets. Go to www.ketuckyspeedway.com or call (859) 578-2300.

Local historian Curt Dalton penned Miami Valley’s Marvelous Motor Cars, a 95-page chronicle of the 50 makes and models of cars built in the area. It is available at the museum store at Carillon Historical Park for $19.95.

For the Porsche racing enthusiast, there is nothing like the 917, and photographer Jeff Zwart has photographed 17 of the cars in his studio. Porsche 917 x 17 includes 190 color and black and white photos along with portraits and stories of 15 drivers of the cars.
