Wittenberg men, women advance to NCAC semifinals

Games will be played Friday at Wooster, DePauw

The Wittenberg men’s and women’s basketball teams won their North Coast Athletic Conference quarterfinal games Tuesday at Pam Evans Smith Arena, advancing to semifinals on the campuses of Wooster and DePauw, respectively.

The men's team, seeded second and ranked 22nd in the D3Hoops.com poll, won its eight straight game. A 73-51 victory against Ohio Wesleyan sets up a 7:30 p.m. Friday game against No. 3 seed and 25th-ranked Wabash, which beat Hiram 87-76. The Tigers beat Wabash 76-62 on Feb. 13 in Springfield after losing the first match 96-83 in January.

Wittenberg (21-5) outscored Ohio Wesleyan 16-0 in the first seven minutes and led 24-5 after 12 minutes. Connor Seipel scored 29 points on 13-of-15 shooting. In the last two games, he has made 25 of 29 shots and scored 57 points.

James Johnson added 12 points. Jake Bertemes had 11. Levi Boettcher scored 10 off the bench.

Wittenberg or Wabash (21-5) will play No. 1 seed and 12th-ranked Wooster (22-4) or No. 4 seed DePauw (17-9) in the championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday. The Scots escaped an upset in the quarterfinals, beating Allegheny 91-89 on a layup by Reece Dupler with 3.3 seconds to play. DePauw advanced with a 66-62 victory against Oberlin.

DePauw plays Wooster in the first semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Wooster’s Timken Gymnasium.

The fourth-seeded Wittenberg women (18-8) beat No. 5 Oberlin 70-64. Delaney Williams broke a tie game with a layup at the 3:27 mark in the fourth quarter, and the Tigers led the rest of the way. Williams scored 16 points. Kristie Kalis added 13 points.

Wittenberg advanced to face No. 1 seed and 19th-ranked DePauw (22-4) at 5 p.m. Friday in Greencastle, Ind. No. 2 seed Denison (17-8) plays No. 6 Ohio Wesleyan (11-15) in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. The winners play at 4 p.m. Saturday in the championship game.

Wittenberg split two games with DePauw in the regular season, losing 61-52 on Dec. 5 at DePauw and winning 65-61 in Springfield on Jan. 23.
