Urbana University tops St. Joseph’s

URBANA — Urbana University wide receiver Ian Iler scored two touchdowns in the first quarter as Urbana University football team beat St. Joseph’s College 21-14 during Homecoming weekend at Ellis Field on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Iler scored on a 6-yard run from the wildcat formation to tie the game at 7-7. Then freshman David Gerber, making his first start at quarterback, hit Iler with a 29-yard scoring strike for a 14-7 lead.

In the second quarter, Dan Goodrum returned a blocked punt 74 yards to score the eventual game-winning touchdown as Urbana (4-3) won its second straight game. The Pumas fell to 3-5.

USC 34, Notre Dame 27: Jimmy Clausen threw three incomplete passes into the end zone in the closing seconds as No. 6 Southern California held on to defeat No. 25 Notre Dame for the eighth straight time.

Notre Dame’s streak of last-minute victories ended at three, but the Fighting Irish at least showed they could compete with their longtime rivals this season.

The Irish rallied from a 34-14 deficit, but couldn’t score into the same end zone where the Trojans famously scored four years ago on the Bush Push. On Clausen’s first pass into the end zone, Kyle Rudolph made a juggling catch but was out of bounds. The second was knocked down by Josh Pinkard and the Trojans started celebrating thinking the game was over.

But the officials ruled there was 1 second left. Clausen fired to Duval Kamara, who slipped and couldn’t get a hand on it.

Dayton 17, Davidson 0: Steve Valentino threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead the Flyers.

Valentino was 10-for-18 passing for 145 yards and an interception for the Flyers (5-1, 3-0 Pioneer League), and rushed for 77 yards on 19 carries. Justin Watkins caught five balls for 106 yards and a score.

Valentino and Watkins connected on a 29-yard touchdown in the second quarter to give Dayton a 7-0 halftime lead, and Valentino’s 1-yard TD rush pushed the lead to 14-0 midway through the third.
