Toledo’s Logan Woodside looking for his opportunity to impress NFL scouts

The Cincinnati Bengals probably won’t take a quarterback early in the NFL draft.

If they do, Louisville’s Lamar Jackson could present an intriguing option, especially if he slides to the second round.

A native of Kentucky might make a more realistic choice later in the draft.

Logan Woodside is a Frankfort Franklin County graduate coming off two seasons as the best quarterback in the MAC.

He threw for 10,514 yards and 93 touchdowns at Toledo, where he was the MAC Offensive Player of the Year last season.

Coming from a QB-friendly conference and offense, there are questions about how hue game translates to the NFL, but that’s what this week is about.

The combine provides him a chance to impress NFL scouts both in workouts and the meeting room.

“A lot of the QB coaches tell me I have a real shot to play in the National Football League, and that’s all you can ask for,” Woodside said. “I’m not worried if I’m gonna get drafted or where I get drafted even if I do. I know eventually I’ll get a shot. It’s just up to me to make the most of it.”

He said he would be open to being a Bengal and has already met with new Cincinnati quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt.

The Bengals are committed to Andy Dalton as their starter in 2018, but they are likely to be in the market for a backup quarterback pending the health of Jeff Driskel

Woodside said getting to learn behind an established starter could present an ideal situation for him whether that was in Cincinnati or elsewhere.

“Hopefully they’ll take me under their wing and I can just be a sponge and soak up as much knowledge as I can.”
