Springfield High School senior receiver Michael Brown-Stephens announced via Twitter that he is verbally committed to play football at the University of Minnesota in the Big Ten.
He joins Wildcats senior teammate and DB Moses Douglass (Kentucky), the son of head coach Maurice Douglass, in committing prior to the upcoming season. More Springfield Class of 2019 recruits are sure to follow, including offensive lineman Isaiah Gibson.

An outstanding sprinter, the 5-10, 180-pound Brown-Stephens inherits the role of go-to receiver. He had 24 catches for 341 yards (14.2) and accounted for five touchdowns last season. He also had five kickoffs for 134 yards (26.8) and two punt returns for 31 yards (15.5).

Brown-Stephens was a key relay member of the Wildcats’ track and field team this past spring that placed third as a team in the Division I state meet. He’s rated a 3-star prospect by 247sports.com and had other offers from Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Kentucky, Kent State, Kentucky, Toledo and Youngstown State.

Current area players listed on Minnesota’s roster are senior redshirt and starting center Jared Weyler of Centerville and Alex Reigelsperger, a freshman linebacker from Wayne.

Springfield was 6-4 last season and 1-3 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference National East. Preseason practice begins Monday, July 30. Springfield will host Lancaster in a season opener at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24.
