Springfield native Adam Eaton hits grand slam while blowing bubble

Springfield native Adam Eaton showed his abilities as a multi-tasker Wednesday, blowing a bubble as he hit his first career grand slam in the ninth inning for the Chicago White Sox. The bubble popped just after the ball left the bat.

Eaton, the 2007 Kenton Ridge High School graduate who starred at Miami University for three seasons, gave the White Sox a 10-7 lead in the ninth inning against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. It was part of a five-run rally against the American League Central-leading Indians.

Eaton told reporters after the game he wasn’t aware he was blowing a bubble as he swung.

“I think I was so flustered about my swing before,” he said. “I was just trying to make contact, not to look really stupid, and apparently I blew a bubble. I’m all right with that.”

The White Sox (57-62) trail the Indians (68-50) by 11½ games. Eaton is hitting .276 in his third season with the White Sox. He has 11 home runs after hitting a career-high 14 last season. He has 45 RBIs, 19 doubles and seven triples.

In his first season in right field, after a move from center, Eaton has been a defensive star. He leads all outfielders in baseball in assists with 17 and putouts (315).
