Seipel leads Wittenberg Tigers to road win in opener

Senior forward ties career high with 33 points

Senior forward Connor Seipel tied his career high with 33 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the fifth-ranked Wittenberg Tigers to an 87-78 victory on the road Saturday against Brooklyn College (N.Y.) in their season opener.

The Tigers led 42-40 at halftime but gave up a 7-2 run in the first three minutes of the second half. The game was tied at 57-57 with 11:16 to play. Wittenberg then started an 8-0 run and didn’t trail again.

Seipel made 12 of 17 shots from the field and 9 of 10 free throws. Jake Bertemes added 16 points. Landon Martin scored 15.

Wittenberg made 10 of 23 3-pointers (43.5 percent). Martin, Bertemes, James Johnson and Levi Boettcher all hit two 3-pointers.

Wittenberg had a 46-28 rebounding advantage. Brooklyn, which finished 7-19 last season, made 10 of 19 3-pointers (52.6 percent). Jordan Wright scored 28 points.

Wittenberg returns to action at 4 p.m. Nov. 23 against Mount St. Joseph at Pam Evans Smith Arena.
