Playoff golf? No problem for area state-qualifying D-I boys

Carroll’s Tyler Goecke birdied his 17th hole and again in a four-way playoff in the boys Division I district at Beavercreek Golf Course on Thursday and qualified to state for the second straight season.

Joining the Patriots senior at the Ohio State University courses next weekend are seniors Holden Scribner (Troy) and Austin Greaser (Butler).

Led by record-setter Marissa Wenzler, the Centerville girls team also advanced to state along with Sarah O’Connor (Beavercreek) during Tuesday’s girls D-I district at Glenview Golf Course in Cincinnati.

Goecke, Scribner, Greaser and Alex Hewitt (Sycamore) all were tied at 2-over 74. That forced a playoff on the 10th hole to determine the three individual state qualifiers.

Goecke and Scribner both found the fairway with their tee shots on the short par-4. Facing a stiff wind, Goecke coaxed an 8-iron from 137 yards to six feet below the cup, then drained the putt.

“I hit two of (my) best shots,” said Goecke, who was co-medalist with Greaser in the district-qualifying sectional at Yankee Trace, each shooting 66. “To get back there (at state) and have a shot at it, it’s an incredible feeling.”

Both Scribner and Greaser parred the playoff hole to advance. Greaser was fifth at state last season and Goecke, who verbally committed to Wright State this season, tied for 11th. Lakota East (312), Mason (315) and St. Xavier (316) earned the team state berths and East’s Kyle Schmidt (70) was medalist.

• Wenzler shot 68 and was medalist by a 9-stroke margin to lead an impressive showing by the Centerville girls. She joined Kayla Ramsey (80), Jenna Hayes (82) and Meha Pandya (84) in posting a 314 team score, which also was nine strokes better than runner-up Mason (323). Lakota East (325) was the other state team qualifier.

Committed to Kentucky, Wenzler is averaging under par as a senior and will be among the favorites to contend for the state medalist. “If she shoots her scores that she thinks she can shoot, she’ll definitely be one of the top two or three to beat,” said Elks coach Michael Dalton.

Centerville was the D-I girls state runner-up last season.
