Players, coaches land Cox Media Group Ohio All-Area football honors

Record setters, unprecedented seasons and impressive turnarounds were recurring themes for the 2019 All-Area high school football teams.

Offensive and defensive players of the year and a coach of the year were chosen.

Springfield swept two of the three top Division I honors. Senior receiver Larry Stephens was the offensive player of the year and coach Maurice Douglass the coach of the year. Trey Baker, Fairmont’s senior linebacker, was the D-I defensive player of the year.

Trotwood-Madison also collected two of the three top combined Divisions II-III awards. Senior defensive back Sammy Anderson was the defensive player of the year and Rams coach Jeff Graham the coach of the year. Franklin record-setting senior quarterback Braden Woods was the combined Divisions II-III offensive player of the year.

Robie Glass, a senior quarterback at Springfield Shawnee, was the combined Divisions IV-V offensive player of the year. Kyle Wolfe, a senior lineman at West Liberty-Salem, was the defensive player of the year. Bob Skidmore, who guided Valley View to a 10-3 record and into a D-IV regional final, was coach of the year.

Anna senior running back Riley Huelskamp was the combined Divisions VI-VII offensive player of the year and Matt Everman, a senior lineman at Marion Local, the defensive player of the year. Jason Schondelmyer, who took Arcanum from a 2-8 season to 7-3 this year, was the coach of the year.

Players were nominated by coaches and chosen by Cox Media Group Ohio.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association will release the All-Ohio football teams during state championship week. Those teams also are selected based on coaches’ nominations and voted on by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association.

Ohio’s Mr. Football also will be announced on Thursday, Dec. 5.
