Pittsburgh ousts Dayton Flyers from NCAA volleyball tournament

UD finishes the season 30-2

The Dayton Flyers lost in the first round of the NCAA volleyball tournament 3-1 to Pittsburgh on Friday night at Penn State’s Rec Hall.

Dayton won the first set 25-20 and were 24-0 when winning the first set, but they lost the last three sets 25-19, 27-25 and 25-19. The Panthers overcame a 23-17 deficit in the second set.

Jessica Sloan led the Flyers with 14 kills. Jane Emmenecker had 39 assists. Kendyll Brown had seven blocks. Margo Wolf had 16 digs.

Dayton saw its 19-match winning streak end. It finished the season 30-2. This was the fourth time in the last 10 seasons it reached 30 wins. Its .938 winning percentage was the second best in school history. The 2007 team was 33-2 (.943).

This was Dayton’s 12th NCAA tournament appearance and third in a row. It fell to 7-12 in the tournament.

Pittsburgh (25-8) will play Penn State or Long Island-Brooklyn in the second round on Saturday.
