NFL Pro Bowl needs to go away

I hadn’t seen a powder-puff football game since high school. That’s when the junior class girls challenge their senior counterparts to a couple hours of pulling, grabbing and general goofiness.

It’s not serious and sometimes lapses into hilarious. There’s usually one girl who’s better than most, can’t be caught, often gets the ball and makes most tackles. In jockular lingo, that would be a studette.

It’s slap-stick entertainment that everyone enjoys.

And that’s exactly what I watched during Sunday’s NFL Pro Bowl played in Honolulu.

We all know professional all-star games in any sports aren’t what they used to be. For many reasons, including contract money and avoiding injury, players just don’t care like they once did. Many opt out of playing.

We get all that. What I don’t get is what played out at Aloha Stadium. This wasn’t football, not the way we like it at the highest level.

I’ll spare you the details. Let’s just say a couple of “mother-may-I’s?” and “10 Mississippis” were obviously a big part of every play. It was unwatchable and a ratings free fall proves it.

If that’s how much the Pro Bowl has sunk, it’s time to stop it. Better to pick a bunch of players and invite fans to spend a fantasy week with their heroes. Charge for it, give the money to charity and let fans play touch football and run routes and talk smack with their favorite players.

If that’s not feasible, consider bringing back the college all-star game. That thing was brutally pure and always was a great way to kick off another season.

Better yet, give us a powder-puff football upgrade. Label it the Lingerie Football League and watch ratings soar. What a novel idea.
