Tipp native returns to Ohio for Eldora sprint car racing

Ben Gregg, who now lives in Arizona, leads in bid for WoO Rookie of the Year award.

ROSSBURG — Tipp City native Ben Gregg enjoys having that Ohio soil back under his sprint car.

Racing under that Ohio spring sky? Well, that he doesn’t miss.

The World of Outlaws sprint car rookie moved to Arizona to avoid days like Saturday, May 8, when unseasonably cold temperatures and overcast skies made for a raw day of racing at Eldora Speedway.

“I just decided to pick up and move to where the sun shines every day. That’s all,” Gregg, 36, said of relocating to Phoenix about 16 years ago. “I don’t love (Ohio weather), but I love coming back.”

Like that Ohio weather, Gregg’s return was also a grab bag. On Friday he finished 34th and last in qualifying (14.171 seconds around the half-mile track). He finished next to last in the nine-car heat and 12th (out of 14) in the B-Main.

On Saturday, Gregg —perhaps benefiting from gulps of that Kronik Energy Drink that sponsors his No. 2B winged sprint — qualified 21st (13.497). He finished second in the B-Main to start him 21st in the A-Main feature, where he finished 20th.

Paul McMahan captured Saturday’s A-Main and Joey Saldana grabbed Friday’s win.

Gregg exited the WoO’s double feature weekend leading the chase for the Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award.

“They’re the best in the business and we thought we’d give it a try,” the 1992 Tippecanoe High School graduate said of running with some of the world’s best sprint car drivers. “The World of Outlaws is the top of the food chain in sprint cars so we prefer them.”

Scott Orr won the UMP modified feature on Saturday and Ed Johnson, in just his third appearance at Eldora, won the stock feature.

KIL-KARE SPEEDWAY: Dayton’s Don Mahaffey Jr. won his second straight late model feature at Kil-Kare Speedway on Friday. Bill Burba (modifieds), James Harding (stocks) and Tim Haerr (compacts) also won features.
