Mayfield saga won’t end, and that’s good

It’s always sad, yet often amusing, when a sports figure turns into a cartoon character before our eyes.

That’s been the case with NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield ever since he started testing positive for banned substances.

I read a column by a guy in Florida who wants Mayfield to exit stage left already, but I couldn’t disagree more. This drama is way too entertaining to end now.

Especially enjoyable has been the part where Mayfield’s stepmother turned against him, saying she personally witnessed him using methamphetamine dozens of times and that he even cooked his own before a key ingredient was banned.

Mayfield called his stepmom some vile names and charged her with killing his father, whose death has been ruled a suicide.

I support NASCAR in keeping Mayfield off the track. After at least two failed drug tests, allowing him to go 180 mph in a racecar makes about as much sense as extending that privilege to Cheech and Chong.

But let’s face it, this is a script that would make Vince McMahon blush. NASCAR may be embarrassed, but fans eat this stuff up and, personally, I can’t wait to hear more from the stepmom.

Just to be clear, I did not witness Mayfield using illicit drugs on his visit to Dayton some years back when he signed autographs at a downtown car show. Curiously, though, he did fly into the wrong airport, making him about an hour late. I’m sure he just mixed up his over-the-counter medicines that day.
