Mechanicsburg’s Kaleb Romero wins prestigious wrestling award

Add another accolade for Kaleb Romero.

The Mechanicsburg wrestler who is headed to Ohio State is the Ohio winner of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award.

Earlier this year, Romero won the state championship at 170 pounds to cap off a 52-0 season and become Ohio’s 29th four-time state champion.

He was also a standout quarterback for the Indians football team.

The DSHSEA was established in 1996 to honor Olympic and World champion Dave Schultz, whose career was cut short when he was murdered in January 1996. Schultz was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member in 1997 and as a member of the United World Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2016.

Past winners of the national DSHSEA include Graham High alumni David Taylor and C.P. Schlatter.
